An extensive look at how the 2001 forgotten Disney classic was made. It features interviews with the directors, cast and crew. Enjoy this wonderful production.
This is uploaded for the purpose of education for the viewer on the history of this piece of animation. I do not own this, and if the Disney Corporation wants it taken down then I will take it down.

I like Setting The Scene (28:43) because it discusses how they animated the film in Scope (2.39:1).

Dr Sweet was one of my favorite characters since I can remember, the way he talks, the way he behaves! He is just so cool and different! I am so thankful for him, specially for Audrey too because she looks so much like me, she influenced a little mexican girl to be proud and tough no matter gender or size. I couldnt be happier to have grown with a film full of life, love and diversity like this one.
This is perhaps one of my favorite Disney movies, I was infatuated with it as a child and as a young adult it still enchants me ❤
They just copied Nadia from Gainax...
Great film! I wish Disney would make more original stories like this.
Man lava whales would have been sick!!what you talking bout
What pisses me off is that this was the film Disney dedicated to Jim Varney's memory, and they now pretend that it never existed. Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet are two forgotten gems.
Why will Disney remake every movie we don't want, but refuse to make the ones we do want? Disney! ATLANTIS! REMAKE. ATLANTIS!
Kida was my favorite Disney Princess as a kid because she was bilingual like me
Really really love this movie
we may all agree that the "sequel" sucked ass but im kinda thrilled that it managed to give the lava whales a second chance (even if it was a tinier, less intimidating version of them lmao)
Great. Now I want mexican food.
If they made this movie as a tv series with hour long episode they couldve easily done all the crazy ideas that were cut from this movie and it would have felt like a juggling act. Granted its an amazing movie and one of my favorites but if disney doesnt do a live action version of this then a tv series would work just as well
Made this VHS they reading.
Know a company made a move got sued . Printed papers.
Journalists made this.
At least show the faces of the made VHS.
Had VHS stolen it.
How do put VHS movies on DVD and on MNnews.
Found this VHS.
How do tiny men take the dvd movies and put them on MNnews.
Watching this knowing the lava whales come back in the sequel
These people are my heroes! This movie teached me so much about life at such an early age. I dont belive any other movie could have influenced me the way this one did!
I really wish newer movies stopped boasting their specs and expensive technology, and rather go take trips, study and bond to really have fun creating something they love naturally.
“Solo sha mah Milto Tatch itomo” Anyone else remember that line Kida says to Milo from the end of the movie trailer? (It means “Do not worry Milo Thatch”) I remember watching this whole documentary when I was a kid. My mom took me to see the movie in theatres and we loved it so much When it came out on VHS, my mom bought my first DVD, this movie, the special edition. This documentary was on the second disc. I still have this DVD to this day. The second DVD I got was another Disney/Pixar movie that’s been forgotten, Dinosaur. Don’t know if anyone remembers that movie but it was amazing.
“We actually used the internet” HAHAHAH
a very underrated movie
Atlantis otherwise known as Dwarka in reality is so special... and this is a wonderful interpretation... with little knowledge of the history they managed to make you feel it 100% and that i think is what always drove me to find Atlantis myself ...its crazy to think had it not been for Disney of all things lol i would never known about such a beautiful place and for that i'm grateful to this team and all the struggles that they had to go through to make this movie. Amazing job.
Milo’s Impression of Stuart Little.
R.I.P Jim Varney (1949-2000)
Maybe “Sinbad: legend of the seven seas” took the ‘monster parade’ idea and said “we’ll do that”
1:02:33 - Music and Sound James Newton Haward.
I love this movie, but I always thought the 3-D and 2-D looked a little weird together.
"Whoever took the 'L' from the 'Motor Pool' sign, ha-ha - we're all very amused." The dialogue in this movie always cracks me up
I remember loving this movie, and i still love it. I feel it never got quite the recognition it deserved.
35:06
I still wish this had a full series like The Little Mermaid, Lilo and Stitch, Aladdin, Hercules, and Tarzan did.
let me have a girlfriend
"What is it, a pod of whales?" "Uh-uh, bigger..." I love that dialogue line and response! Goosebumps.
6:04 The complete opposite of what Disney is nowadays.
The shepherd's book sounds like the Bible to me
Jim was doing this and toy story 2
R I p Jim varney
Miss Packard was also grandma on dinosaurs
Dr spock
Cree was awesome
23:06 they made it in the sequel.
Real documentary on Atlantis Me: Eh boring MNnews recommends the making of Atlantis the Lost empire Documentary Me: Interesting, I like this very much
The journey begins, into the exploration of our unique animated production history and feature overall, that I haven't returned to in so long. Stay safe everyone!
12:50 edgar cayce lol david wilcock, project camelot
Atlantis is southern florida, cuba, and stretched up to england, and there were city states off california, hawaii and the easter islands - ASHAYANA DEANE voyagers 1 and 2 look it up
"he governed ... poorly"
THE MAKING OF ATLANTIS? like THE PLACE?
I wish we could see the scenes of people fighting over the shepherds journal. Start it off from Kidas point of view THEN people fighting over the shepherds journal throughout the centuries until the crew found it. 😥
@TeylaDex sweeeet. Thanks.
The original opening is on MNnews. Just look for atlantis lost empire original opening or viking opening
"Atlantis: fewer songs, more explosions" - sounds like the best slogan a movie could have 😆
How can you dislike a video that is dvd extras? People have no life😂
Drinking game: take a shot every time the Mexican restaurant is mentioned 🌮🌯
I'm sure this is interesting for people involved with making movies... but as a person who got sent here by youtube... This is the most self-congratulatory two hours of boredom imaginable....
Well look at the over 500 comments disagreeing with you...
I’m forever thankful for cast and crew of making movie of my childhood special like Atlantis the lost empire I wished would get appreciation acknowledgment and recognition it rightfully deserved
Why the hell was Atlantis and Treasure Planet underrated? I watched the movie when I was 12 and I still remember every part and memorized the theme songs.
No marketing, bad opening times. No tie ins anywhere. He looks, treasure planet was purposefully released the first weekend after Harry potter 1. Disney only wanted, and still wants, to make princess movies. Those movies were do bild, adventurous, couldn't be watched by the three year old.
This is one of the best
I wish the treasure planet 'making of' was this long. This movie and that movie are 2 of my favourites.
The story of how they made this could be a movie itself! I cried!
Why isn't this longer?! 😖
My home!!!🌊
Happy 20th! This movie changed my life and made me love art and animation more. I want to be great like all these wonderful people. YwY
This movie is embarrassed to be seen with modern Disney productions, Disney went the way of messaging, not the way of Art.
My family Disney animated film. Too bad it was underrated and overlooked when it came out. I saw it in theaters 3 times
2 hours of talking but they don't talk about Stargate once? The movie that they basically ripped off doesnt get a mention?
It's almost painful to think how much this movie is overlooked in the Disney catalogue when you consider how much work and passion went into it
i feel the same way about this film and treasure planet. A real shame that these movies aren't recognized, but I have hope for a future generation of creative and inspired individuals that will one day realize the achievement that these men and women have made.
it's a shame the movie takes a nosedive with the romance stuff towards the end.
Thanks for posting this. I worked on this movie 23 years ago but never had a chance to watch this until today! The crew worked very hard on this beautiful movie. Unfortunately, it was released right at the time when the audience were hyped about the new experience of 3-D animated movies. Therefore the box office sale was flop. It was said. Yet I’m still very proud to had a chance to work on this production, alongside with a lot of talented artists whom eventually I have become friends with.
So underrated was a beautiful original movie!
I just took a nap... While watching some video... I woke up to this...
I used to think that Atlantis was good material for a disney remake as it wasn't as well known and beloved as other properties and it therefore had room for improvement. I feel it still is a bit justified but after seeing the passion and work that went into the project I now think why would they bother rehashing such a fine film? It may not have garnered the attention or box office of the other movies, but I do not see any attempts at remaking atlantis coming out with anything better than what was made before. Truly underated
The rampant delivery consecutively fix because grey experimentally decay unto a kind crook. misty, rigid van
I was OBSESSED with this movie when I was 10, and the video game too.
Why does Tab Murphy remind me of George Lucas so much? And isn't it kinda weird, that the Disney movies, that weren't that successful, are pretty high up on my all-time-favourites list? I just love Atlantis, The Black Cauldron and Treasure Planet and I think all of them are pretty underrated.
Thats because those are the only movies past the late 70s that are not princess musicals. And the studio didn't really want them anyways, so, less interference. Except of course for no advertisement, crushing opening dates and what else made those movies flop.
Pride Rock and Castles is nothing when compared to Atlantis and Lost Planet in my eyes.
this is cool but i think they shouldve not made this movie to put more money into treasure planet.
The full documentary. Well I should think for nearly 2-hours it better be !
"We want the movie to be like you're in a comic book" - Into the Spiderverse has entered the chat
lol real diverse team you got there guys
It was a good plot overshadowed by perfect characters and flawless animation, Disney couldn't make a movie like this today especially with the assembly line monstrosities, live action remakes they've been focusing on, see the problem with assembly lines is that someone is doing a good job but ultimately because one step was shoddy the whole final product is terrible and there's no one to blame because the guy who did a good job approved of the first guy's shoddy work
Wasn't this movie heavily "inspired" by the old anime Nadia and The Secret of Blue Water?
@Mike Jack and that was a rip off of a jules verne story. There are only so many ideas for stories to tell, and with the vast amount of stuff around, everyone is inspired by everything. One could also say its a stargate ripoff. The most important thing is for story to be told with heart.
@TeylaDex well, not for nuthin but, the 2 main characters are actually direct rip offs as well as the entire Atlantis motiff. Disney has a history of ripping off lesser known anime for example the classic Lion King movie is at times a shot for shot plagiarism of the anime Kimba the White Lion
Oh yes, a boy, a girl, a stone and it plays pre world war 1
24:12 Mike Mignola (production designer)
Leonard nemory rest his soul played so many roles including in kingdom hearts knowing he died and is apart of this movie simply amazing
this movie is so over rated. sad. its a great movie
I'm in such trouble. I have this unquenchable passion for filmmaking like this... but I want to try EVERY ROLE, from the voice acting to the line cleanup to the sound effects! *drags hands down face in exasperation* And then of course I wonder if I'll ever get to try ANY of them due to my fear of failure that I'm constantly allowing to let me procrastinate instead of work my ass off to get there. *sigh*
I still think this movie is very similar to the movie Stargate. If you want a live action version of Atlantis, watch Stargate.
My favorite Disney Movie: Atlantis
I love this movie
*Treasure Planet > Atlantis: The Lost Empire* Fight me!!!
The music for this movie is phenomenal
The opening sequence they went with makes me tear up each time I watch it. It's just so heartbreaking.
I know I'm not the only one staying this. This movie is criminally underrated. I swear, Disney movies these days have no passion anymore. This company is dead inside. These people creating Atlantis didn't care about making money. They cared in making a good, fun, and entertaining movie. And they got it. I don't care if many can't see the brilliance and worth of this film. I do get it and I wish, for the love of God, for the love of Walt Disney himself, that the Disney company would go back to creating good quality entertainment like this. But I'm an idiot, an imbecile, for wishing these things. It's never going to happen.
19:17 Wow. Rourke looks more like a spiked demon. You can also see he would of just fall off the blimp instead of smashing face first to the propeller blades.
Where was this passion for the animation in the second movie?
Every documentary about an animated film: "Well, we met for lunch in Burbank and we were talking about life..."
